Corona’s Other Side…

Just as I thought things were settling down, and that I could relax into retirement, the Coronavirus Pandemic put us all in lock down.  We’re all forced to work from home, keep our distance from one another and life as we knew it has completely changed.  The financial markets are crashing, people are dying, and many are out of work because all essential businesses are closed.  Children are now being home schooled.  Celebrations and events of all kinds are now cancelled.  We can’t even go to funerals to say our last goodbyes.  On top of all that, grocery store shelves are bare because some are panicking and hoarding so that others couldn’t get essential items and basic needs fulfilled.

Although my main profession is now focused on mental health and emotional balance, through all of this, my corporate compliance and fraud examiner mind kicked in.

What made this new coronavirus strain evoke such a worldwide reaction compared to other viruses in the past?

My inquisitive brain began researching.   According to the CDC, in week 12 of 2020 the 2019/2020 flu season had 39 million cases in the United States with 24 thousand deaths (0.06% mortality rate ).  The CDC also reported that, as of 4/1/2020 the US had about 186 thousand cases with approximately 3600 deaths (nearly 2%) of COVID-19.  This compared to COVID-19, which according to the WHO as of the writing of this document, worldwide has had approximately 850 thousand cases identified with 40 thousand deaths (4%) during the same time that the flu peaks.  So even though there were less identified cases of the flu, the death rate was much higher for both US and Worldwide cases.

During my research I read so many online articles downplaying the severity of COVID-19.  I found many opinions that pointed to political reasons being to blame, such as the US China trade deal that wasn’t to the liking of the Chinese government.  Other opinions pointed to communists, socialists and anyone against the current US government being to blame.  I actually started to wonder if any of these sources were valid.  I even went so far as to question if there was fraud at the start of this.  Fraud being the intent to harm and deceive.  As I went through this inquisitive process, I began to find myself being dragged under emotionally.

I was starting to feel myself become off kilter and I realized I wasn’t the only one.  Too many social media posts revealed many people suffering from the stress and anxiety of the current events.  I had to find the balance in all of this.

I continued to research, and as Certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide and Certified Mindset Transformation Coach, I am led to believe that there is an emotional and environmental shift taking place.

The human population has caused significant damage to our planet over the past decades.  Pollution, reduction in wildlife and natural resources have all had an impact on our land and our weather.  Here in the United States, the focus on work and making money being a priority has had a significant impact on our relationships and our mental health.  Since COVID-19 has been brought to light, in just a few months, we are now witnessing the Earth, as a whole, beginning to heal.

With humans hunkering down, nature is coming back to life.  And it’s not just that spring is starting to bloom.  In Venice Italy, the canals are clearing, and the sea life is flourishing.  According to the United State’s NASA and the European Space Agency, pollution is down all over the world as more than ½ the motor vehicles aren’t on the roads and public transportation is on a reduced schedule because ridership is down.

Most of our office jobs have turned to remote alternatives allowing us to spend more time at home.  Families are bonding over meals because everyone is home instead of running to practices, meetings, this function or that.  While practicing social distancing, humans are getting outside and connecting to nature in their solitude.

The human race is finding new ways to connect to each other, nature and beyond.  Connection to God, Source and the Universe is also on the rise as people turn to their higher power to help get through these difficult times.  Many are finding alternative ways to do business.  Essential businesses are no longer where our unsung heroes are employed.  Gratitude towards those who keep our health systems and economy moving is at an all time high.  We are witnessing neighbors coming together to help each other and more so our elders.  Community seems to be finding a new balance.

During these stressful and fearful times, approaching life from a balanced perspective is so important.  Stress and Anxiety when untreated, leads to Depression and being S.A.D.

Learning to identify the balance in all of this and finding emotional balance in all areas of life brings peace, joy, contentment, fulfillment and success.

Here are some ideas to help you reduce your stress and anxiety right now:

  1. Breathe Deep – in through the nose to the count of six, hold for 3 and out through the mouth for the count of six.  Do this 3 or 4 times and repeat throughout your day to bring you back into the present moment.
  2. Green Space – if you can get outside to a park or even your yard.  If you can’t go outside, do you have a plant or 2 in your space?  Green space has been proven to help improve your overall well being.  Connecting to nature has proven to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and boost your immune system.
  3. Meditate – There are so many benefits to meditation on top of simply relaxing.  It does take practice but even 5 minutes to start can help.
  4. Gratitude – Focusing on gratitude for all aspects of a situation whether perceived positive or negative, be grateful for all it has to offer.

This pandemic will pass in time.  How you fare, will depend on how you approach each day.

If you are stressed and anxious, you are actually impairing your immune system and will be more susceptible to contracting disease.  If you connect with nature and approach life from a B.A.D Ass perspective, you will be physically and emotionally empowered to help fight off infection.

Dawn-Marie P. Dalsass, President of Livelihood Spirit Balance is a Stress Management Maven. She’s a Stress and Anxiety Expert for Middle Managers. She started her career in Corporate America while she was in high school and worked her way up the ranks finding herself in middle to upper management for most of her corporate career. She loved what she did but along the way she battled stress, anxiety and depression. When work and life were more than she could handle she planned her suicide in detail. Fortunately, she didn’t go through with it when she saw her 2 little boys on her way to get a knife with a plan to end it all. It was in that moment that she vowed to pull herself together and begin a new journey.

In 2015 she started her own business called Life Coach DM. After several years of working with clients, she realized that the majority of her clients were in middle management just like she was. She had helped most go from being stressed, anxious and / or depressed to being more balanced, aware and dynamic while guiding them on their own journey to achieve life goals including work life balance.

Dawn-Marie has since become a Certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide and teaches individuals how they too can annihilate the stress, anxiety and depression (aka S.A.D) that middle managers and working parents can face through a process called equilibration (the balancing of the mind and emotions) along with the healing benefits a deep connection to nature (both indoors and out) can bring to become fully balanced, aware and dynamic (aka B.A.D).

Through her own practice, Dawn-Marie discovered what she calls Livelihood Spirit Balance where how one lives their life is in alignment with their authentic self, their B.A.D Ass-self. With Livelihood Spirit Balance, Work Life Balance and everything else just falls into place.

Based on her years of work and client success stories, Dawn-Marie changed her business name to Livelihood Spirit Balance to align with her teachings, mission, vision and purpose.

Dawn-Marie offers online courses, personal and corporate development coaching, workshops and seminars. As the owner of Total Convalescence – Nature & Forest Therapy she also offers public and private Nature & Forest Therapy Walks.
